Virtual Assistant or Virtual Receptionist

This is typically a person who is off site and answers the phone and does other office and personal assistant type functions. This is a fairly new industry which uses VoIP, email, conferencing and other online services to handle everyday business matters. In recent years the virtual assistant has become synonymous with virtual call routing via a virtual receptionist system that lets the caller call a virtual phone number, then traverse a menu system to find the person, or department, they are looking for. This is followed by the system forwarding the call to the appropriate person, or department.

Like a real assistant, a virtual virtual assistant can accept faxes, transcribe voice mails to text and forward it to the appropriate email address, or cell phone number, and can also use a find-me follow-me hierarchy to find a person and ring their phone. Since the system asks the caller's name, the system acts like a real receptionist by screening the call, which allows the person being called the option of accepting the call, or sending the caller to voice mail.
